L’exposition The Woods in Colour concrétise un nouveau départ dans la pratique habituelle de Steve deBruyn. Lorsqu’il travaille sur des installations à grand déploiement, il est fréquent qu’un élément de performance survienne pendant que l’œuvre est en train de se faire. Travaillant toujours in situ, et souvent comme artiste en résidence, il arrive à s’immerger dans un projet, à le vivre et à le respirer du tout début jusqu’à sa diffusion. Pour Steve deBruyn, ce qui est présenté dans la galerie est presque plus la preuve d’un processus de création d’un spectacle d’art que d’une œuvre d’art isolée. Avec cette exposition, il utilise ce même processus-performance de travail, mais à plus petite échelle, afin de le documenter pour le partager dans l’espace d’exposition, pour la première fois en vidéo et en photographie numérique.

The exhibition The Woods in Colour represents a departure from Steve deBruyn’s usual practice. While he ordinarily works on large-scale installation projects, there is often an element of performance that happens while the work is being made. Since he always works in situ, usually as an artist in residence, he can immerse himself in a project, living and breathing it from the starting point up until the opening of the exhibition. He often feels that what is presented in the gallery in the end is almost more evidence of the process of creating an art show rather than a stand-alone piece. With this exhibition, he uses his same working process but on a smaller scale and attempts to document this process/performance in order to share it in the gallery space, for the first time in video and digital imaging.
